The Cycle of Music

Music for me is like fish and water.  Sluts and penises.  Internets and trolls.  I always need it.  If there's not something worming it's way into my ears like the tongue of a carnivorous alien, then the voices... err I get bored.

But 600+ songs gets boring after a while, so I'm always on the search for something new.  So I turn on Last.fm, borrow my mom's car to listen to the radio, or just go on YouTube and search for random anime songs (obviously I wouldn't find any of those on the radio, that would be awesome though.)

Listening to this on my Ipod, suddenly feel like it's my own personal theme song.  Try to stop from breaking out in dance.
After taking my precious time to pirate each and every song carefully, I let my OCD take over and find and put in all of the correct information.  So then I take the newly downloaded songs and listen to them.  A lot.  Enough to learn all the lyrics- even the anime ones, despite not speaking a word of Japanese (I do actually).

After a while, even they get boring, so I am forced to turn on shuffle and listen to all my songs.  At that point, these "new" songs fall into categories:  The "fuck yeah why haven't I listened to this in forever" category, the "oh wow why do I still have this song" and finally the "OMG Smash Mouth nostalgiagasm." category.

At best this gives me a couple of weeks before my next download spree.  At which point the cycle starts all over again.

It Came from Youtube

They say passive aggressiveness never really gets you anywhere. But it also guarantees that you won’t get your face beat in, you little punk-ass bitch. That being said, when you come across someone you can't help but butt heads with, it's better to take the passive approach in hopes that you might actually gain their favor, and not their rage. Like this.

As long as there are hot girls out there that can get away with being horrible, and there are still passive-aggressive guys out there with shriveled-up man berries (me being one of them), scenes like this will exist. Please don't hurt me.

I was trying to find another video for tonight, but I was to busy replaying this over and over. I don't usually post music for this segment, but this is just that catchy.

I had an English teacher once in middle school who loved to listen to Barbra Streisand. Maybe if this type of music was around when I was in middle school I would have payed attention more. Or I would have started taking lsd.

Shuffle

I'm beginning to think that I have a strange ability for deduction. Not quite Sherlock Holmes, but it's pretty good. For instance, talking on Skype with my friend, I heard the faint sound of a can opening. Knowing his parents were having a party, along with their drink preferences, I quickly said "How's that coke?" After making sure his webcam was unplugged, he asked me suspiciously how I knew.  Long story short, brix were shat.  Slowly though, I think this ability is leaking into the electronics.

I often turn on shuffle when I'm bored of listening to one song over and over, but some of these times I think my Ipod will pick, out of over 700 songs, the perfect one just right for the current situation I'm in. For instance,  had Jury Duty a couple of months ago (which I wanted to Troll the hell out of, but didn't for fear of being locked up; can't blog from prison.) and during the long-ass breaks, I would listen to my Ipod. We were asked to stay Impartial, but after "Testify" by Rage Against the Machine and "Justice in Murder" by Coheed and Cambria started playing, I kind of forgot about the whole impartiality part.

Damn you Apple!
Today I ended up going snowboarding, and what would you know, it did it again.  Just to name a few:
Winter- B-Complex
Snow (Hey Oh)- Red Hot Chili Peppers
So Cold- Breaking Benjamin.

Somehow, during my weight training class, this even happens too, though walking on the treadmill to the beat of Daft Punk is pretty awesome.

Anime Openings

There are several types of anime openings and endings. Barring a few such as the Ghost in the Shell and Serial Experiments Lain openings which have openings in Russian and English, most of them are in Japanese, usually with some Engrish thrown in. Just as in western music, there are different genres. In general, there are three genres of anime music; rock, pop, and moé (cutesy).

The Japanese J-pop scene is probably the most popular, recognizable pretty much all over the world. Any opening of ending by groups like Flow, L’Arc En Ciel, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Orange Range, or any other J-Pop group falls under this category. Patty and Konata can probably explain it better.

Rock is kind of similar to pop, especially in the instrumentation, but rock has more power to it. In other words, the music has a different feel to it, even with a similar sound. Take the Xam’d opening, by one of my favorite J-rock bands, Boom Boom Satellites.

Moé, the final type, is hard to define in English, but if you hear it, it becomes clear.

I personally like some of these, especially when voice actors from the series sing the theme songs themselves, such as what happens here or in others such as K-On. Sometimes it sounds like the singers are little girls, and despite voicing them, they actually aren’t. Of course, there are female Japanese singers who don’t sound like little girls, and some males singers who do.

Another one of my favorite Op’s is an oddball, being that it is sung by a Japanese artist, but it is done completely in English. Some of you may recognize it.

I know I have some Bleach fans out here.

HateF**K

I recently downloaded some new music, some of which included the band “The Bravery,” which has quickly became one of my new favorite bands. First off, it has one of the best names ever. I’m pretty sure their mascot should be courage wolf. One of my favorite songs by them has an equally awesome name, Hatefuck.

If you examine the meaning of the name and the lyrics, they form a very interesting topic. If you don’t get it, take a look at this graph. The top left holds the key.

The Island of Awesome. Yes, the point where you can entwine genitalia with your worst enemy is apparently the greatest form of awesome ever, assuming they are of the opposite sex. No feelings (besides undying rage) involved, just get in there, have your fun, then get the hell out, like you just pulled the pin on a hand grenade, then blew your load all over it. Now this could never happen, right?

Imagine that bitchy girl in high school, who ended up going to community college with you because she focused more on her makeup then her homework. She just broke up with her boyfriend, and since you just got a really good haircut, and actually shaved and took a shower that morning, you’re looking pretty good. Ever since that time in chemistry where she caught you looking at her butt you both have hated each other, but at that moment, she thinks “I could go for it.” She confronts you after class, and you end up going out to her car… I’ll let you fill in the rest.

Anyways, you get the point. While I'm posting graphs, let me introduce my new blog which just went underway; Diagram This. I figured since I had time during the winter break, I would set up another just for the luls. Follow and support!

4chan Friday

Yay I'm not sick anymore just thought you should know that OK no more rambling here's the post. *Deep Breath*

I don't really have a theme tonight, but I do have /tr/ and /mu/, imagine that.

Yes, /tr/ stands for Team Rocket.  Fuckers be taking over my pokemans.  And what great pokemans they are.  I have this one, and his name is mudkip, and everyone seems to like him for some reason.  Well, it's probably because he says "mud" and "kip" all the time.  You guys must be jealous that you can't catch a pokeman as good as Mudkip.
It's obvious that this child is overjoyed to have a such a huge Mudkip show up at his door.  It can be yours too, for just several thousand hours of grinding, shuffling through the long grass back and forth until your power level allows you to fight and capture this epic pokeman.  Now go out and get one for yourself!

/mu/ stands for music.   I like music.  I just downloaded a bunch of Beatles today for great justice.  I like the songs where they're on drugs.  Some people probably think I'm on drugs while I'm writing posts like this, but I'm really just in my experimental stage, just as the Beatles were in their last stage of composing.  Speaking of composing, I wrote a song kind of.

Ok so first the bass would come in an be all like “bwo bwo bwo bwo bwo” then the rhythm guitar would have this low riff and be all “mahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh chika chicka chicka chicka” then the main guitar would have this awesome thing (still deciding between a variation of "Smoke on the Water" or "Crazy Train," but it's going to be awesome either way). Then, get this.  Didgeridoo solo.  How totally bad-ass would that be?  That's as far as I've gotten, but I'll be sure to keep you guys updated.  Oh ya, /mu/-- It's about music and stuff.  Rock on.

Weird Al

So I was listening to the radio the other day, and I heard a song with a familiar chorus. I said to myself "Hey, this song has a familiar chorus." However, it was missing something... something like an accordion. That's when I realized that it was one of the songs used in one of many polkas made by the master of parodies himself, Weird Al.

Is it weird that I remember his lyrics to the songs better than the "original" ones? And I definitely know I can't get on to American Idol by singing Albuquerque- despite the fact that I know every single word by heart. (For those of you who don't know, it's an 11 minute song about a man who leaves a life of sauerkraut and travels to a town in New Mexico, where he goes on a quest to take back his lucky snorkel from a one-nostriled man, on top of buying doughnuts and doing other things that would probably be considered manslaughter- you can't spell it without 'laughter'.) I guess I can still pass it off as another pointless talent though.

Weird Al pretty much defined the music of my childhood, and still sneaks into my present to remind me of those fun times. Keep it up, man.

Modern Music

Taking History of Rock and Jazz, I have learned that there is lots of music that is timeless, music that has effected what music is today. Jazz brought about Pop, and Pop brought about Rock, which evolved into much of the music we listen to today. However, a lot of the stuff we hear on the radio now may not be around as long as these styles of the past were.

Today, you don’t need to make a good song to make money, you only need to make something catchy. Take Ke$ha for example.

"Oh look, he's using me as an example again."
I hate to say it, but I can't help but enjoy myself when listening to Ke$ha (even if most of it comes from making fun of her). Justin Bieber is extrmely popular as well- one of his videos on Youtube even holds the title of "most viewed ever" (but also one of the most disliked ones as well). However when his testicles drop he will drop out of the spotlight. Then he will end up having to cut his hair because the food service industry that he'll have to work in won't permit it.
Then there's the music of today that you can't even understand.
If you want to be remembered in any number of years from now, you would have to write a pretty extraordinary piece of music, and to be honest, I don't think many performers today are capable of doing that.
Not even this

Best of Youtube: Remixes

I was thinking about writing something witty and explanatory here, but this really says it much better.

Basically, some remixes change up the tune and make it even better, while all the rest are bad rip-offs.

I would totally watch the news if this was the intro.

You would never think these two totally different styles would be a good mix, but it's just so tight and well done.

A remix and a cover all in one. Although they only take the Hayley Williams part from "Airplanes," so it's more like just all Paramore. Either way, I can't stop listening to it. Also check out Zebrahead x Paramore. Via Rambled Thoughts.

One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite animes. This song has countless remixes (including one my friend made for me,) but this is one of my favorites. If you like rap, you can also check out the Anthem Remix.

My friend said once that the Beastie Boys were only good remixed. I believe this is the testament to that. One of my favorite remixes everrrrrr.

SSX 3

I was playing SSX3 with my friend the other day on his Xbox (his 360 red-ringed), and I remember having tons of fun with when I first used to play it several years ago. That was before, of course, I lent it to a friend indefinitely, who later sold his Gamecube and all of his games, including mine. While playing it that day with my friend however, I remembered what I loved most about it: the music.

The in-game "radio" was an excellent companion to the fast paced action of the snowboarding, and even reflected how well you were doing on the slopes. I especially loved the selection of songs; it introduced me to great bands such as "Basement Jaxx," "Yellowcard," "Royksopp," on top of many more.

I even have a lot of these on my computer today, but it still doesn't match listening to them while racing down the slopes grinding rails and doing insane tricks...

Best of Youtube: One Man Band

He who said "variety is the spice of life" must have had plenty of friends to choose from. One year for my High School's talent show, one performer didn't have a band to perform with, so he pre-recorded himself playing several parts to his song, then played along with it during the live performance. That was kind of like this...

Yes, John William is the man. Also, the kazoo version of Enter Sandman (even though it isn't all the same person) is pretty entertaining.

If only she had one of Lady Gaga's outfits for each pane.

I never learned how to play the spoons and the cookie sheet in music class...

I can barely play one instrument, I'm pretty sure the list of what this guy can't play would be shorter than what he can. By the way, this is really catchy if you haven't noticed already.

Playing only one instrument at a time is for sissies. Good thing every single ACDC lick is extremely repetitive. Rack one up for the French.

Do You Like Drugs?

I don't, thank god. But I love listening to music that makes me feel like I do. Yup, I'm talking about techno music.

To be fair, B-Complex and Mt. Eden are actually classified as "Drum and Beat." Most people would just call anything with an electronic feel as "techno," but that is because they are UNEDUCATED SIMPLETONS. If you think about the term, drum and beat, though, it makes sense. It basically includes a drum line, with lots of bass drum, as well as a various beats repeating at different times to make a melody.

The second song is an entire compilation, about an hour long, but it is awesome. Deadmau5 is something I've recently discovered, but I love already. Playlist.com doesn't have a big selection of either B-Complex or Deadmau5 though, so you can check them out on Youtube.

The last song was just an awesome remix I found while putting together this playlist, and I though I would share it with you.

Itunes

I'm always listening to music when I'm on my computer, so I pretty much have Itunes up from the time I boot to the time I shutdown. Since I should be getting a new computer sometime in the near future, I figured I'd look at the play count of certain songs before it all disappears. Here's a list of my top 10 listened to songs, from most to least.

Rise Against has been stuck in my "recently played" ever since I heard "Savior" on the radio and fell in love with it. That's probably why there's three of their songs in there. The others are just random songs that ended up getting played over and over because they are catchy and got stuck in my head. It really helps having a keyboard with multimedia buttons that let me repeat songs over and over. As for the number of plays, the top (Savior) came in at 192. The actual count could be higher, since sometimes I restarted it before it finished.

There was only one song which had no plays at all was Ricardo Villabos's "Fizheuer Zieheuer," a 36 minute long minimalist techno song. My friend is the only person I know who has been able to listen to the whole thing, during a band trip on the bus ride down. For those who are interested, here's the first part.

On a side note, I think I'll start incorporating some of these playlists into my posts. Pretty cool embed (even though I had to play with the html to get it to post right.)

Today's "Best" Music

So occasionaly I pull away from my J-Pop and Breaking Benjamin to listen to what's on the radio these days. I don't really listen to the "new stuff" because my car radio no longer works, and I only really get a chance when riding in my friend's car. I've been using playlist.com a little bit, and from there I checked out some of the trending artists, just to see whats new. Let's take a look at what people are listening to nowadays:

Ke$ha. Ughhhh. First impressions were that she was going to be terrible, just from the way her name was stylized.

Classy

When I first heard "Tik Tok," I though her voice was extremely nasally and hilarious, and when I noticed how auto-tuned it was, I began to laugh even more. But then something happened. I started liking it. FUUUUUUUUU. Ok so she probably doesn't have any real singing talent, and her songs are all written for her, but they're so catchy. Tik Tok is even one of the most parodied songs, with this video explaining Ke$sha's secret to success perfectly. I love to hate her, but I guess getting her song stuck in my head makes her the winner... for now.

Justin Bieber. He would, be like, so totally awesome, if I was like, a 14 year old girl. He's like so totally hot with his prepubescent voice and pseudo-lesbian haircut. Serious though, if I wanted to listen to a girl singing, I would find my old Kidz Bop tapes, dust off the cassette player, and listen to the tween version of "What a Girl Wants." Yes I bought the very first edition of Kidz Bop. Don't judge me. Truthfully, I haven't even listened through even on of his songs, but if one million little girls agree, I'll have take the opposite route. You can thank Canada for this corruption of our pre-teen girls. Despite 4chan trying to send him to Korea where he could possibly be blown up, he will still continue to produce bad music, or at least until his balls drop.

Taylor Swift. I've never payed attention to American Idol or Country Music. However, one day my mom had the radio on and I heard one of her songs without even knowing until they announced it when it ended. I was surprised and found myself liking it. I knew many of people in High School who talked about her and listened too her, and I tend to agree with my peers more than Justin Bieber fans. She seems a lot more classy (refer to the previous example) and talented than a lot of performers today. Also what happened at the VMA's was YO TROLL CAVE I'M REALLY HAPPY FOR YOU AND IMMA LET YOU FINISH, BUT 4CHAN IS ONE OF THE BEST HATERS OF ALL TIME.
...God damn it Kanye...

As for other new stuff I like to listen to, it's been difficult. I try to download a few new songs every couple of weeks, despite my Ipod almost being full. Currently I'm listening to Suneohair, another Japanese artist, which I heard first from the Arakawa Under the Bridge ED. It isn't anything new, but I've been also listening to his songs from the anime Honey and Clover, which I have yet to watch. Pretty smooth and soothing, almost like a Japanese John Mayer. Some songs I hear on the radio are good as well, and I usually end up downloading them.

Best of Youtube: Covers

So what happens if you take a song, then have it performed by somebody other than the people who put it in the spotlight? Impression is the greatest form of flattery, but if you ruin it you're better off not trying. A lot of times covers by nonprofessionals turn out to be a pile of crap that makes the original artists cry. These renditions can range from some garage band trying to play a hit song at a party, or some fangirl mumbling a song from their favorite artist so they can post it on youtube for their fangirl friends. Other times people mix it up and make it better, for instance Alien Ant Farm's cover of Micheal Jackson's "Smooth Criminal," both versions being great, but in the context of different styles. On the other hand, some covers may even put the original to shame...
Cobus is the poster-boy Youtube drum cover, with tons of great videos and even more subscribers. I love drum covers personally, because in the original songs the drummer usually won't go overboard so so they won't overshadow the singer and lead guitar. Covers make the drum part the main focus.

Ignoring the bald guy, this is one of the coolest covers/remixes I've ever heard. I think Robert Miles needs to step up his game a bit.

I love the movie The Fifth Element, especially the scene where this comes from. She definitely has an amazing voice.

Who needs a duet partner when you have an amazing falsetto?

Lady Gaga. Now with an English accent.

Soundtracks

I've never been a big fan of buying CDs and stuff, which usually means I download albums in parts, only getting the stuff I like, and I find out later that I've missed out on good songs. However, when one of my friends brought over his CD collection a while ago, I was able to rip several of them, including the soundtrack to a movie, which I'll talk more about later. Since then, I have added a couple more soundtracks to my collection, and I love them.

The first is the notable Fooly Cooly soundtrack, and despite being only a six episodes long, had a great collection of music. The majority of it is done by The Pillows, a very groovy Japanese soft Rock band.

The music blends in so well with the anime, it was hard to notice until the second time I watched it, which lead to me downloading the album shortly after. After listening to a bunch of hard rock all day, The Pillows are really a nice change, and very calming.

The second soundtrack is from the movie "Appleseed," one of the CD's I got from my friend. When I first got it, I didn't really listen to it that much, but a while ago I got bored and finally watched the actual movie. Appleseed, and the sequel Appleseed: Ex Machina were anime movies released in the mid 00's, whose animations styles really pushed the bounds of technology at the time, and combined with the excellent writing, became must sees for any anime enthusiast.
The Soundtrack came in two parts, one for the actual soundtrack, and one for the score, which was specially written for the movie by Tetsuya Takahashi. The score is an amazing compilation of suspense building movements, slow piano pieces, and various cool actiony songs.

The actual sound track is a mixture of techno, trance and electronica, with great names such as The Boom Boom Satellites and Basement Jaxx. The Satellites are one of my favorite J-Pop bands, with tons of cool drum beats, lyrics, as well as awesome guitar and synth licks. Other songs include trippy techno beats from artists such as T. Raumschmiere and Akufen. Ya, I'm pretty much addicted.

On a semi-related note, I love Daft Punk's Discovery album (as well as most of their other work), which enters the visual plane in the movie "Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem," called the visualization of the Discovery album. If you like Daft Punk and havn't seen this movie... well... go out and watch it already!

Music Montages

I am a music lover, so when a bunch of all gets smashed together into one big pile of awesome, it makes it even better. Tonight I bring you a four way of these.

Great mash up, this guy has talent- check out his other videos.

Similar to the above, but in Mario paint!

Misao. She has a fang and is adorable. What else it there to say?

One I just found today, all within four chords. Pretty awesome.

Others I like include the Weird Al polkas, which If you haven't heard, you've probably been living under a rock.

Coheed and Cambria

If you've ever played rock band or watched the trailer for "9", no doubt you've heard some of Coheed and Cambria's work. Specifically, Welcome Home. People not suffering from rock band (I'll admit this has partially affected me too) have heard some of their other songs as well.

I heard this band in a music video a long time ago, and I casually downloaded the two songs I heard, and that was it. Much later, I started looking into some the artists that I had heard only a couple songs from, and I rediscovered this band.

They were totally different than the other bands I'd listened too. All of their songs include very cool guitar licks and bass lines, set apart from the hard pounding on guitars from other bands. When I heard the spoken part of "Ten Speed" (2:46- 2:59) when I was younger, I though it was so cool, and I continue to love it today. The lead vocalist has a very distinct voice (I always cringe when people mistake it for a woman), and it adds to the already good lyrics. Despite the weird name, they make up a really good band.

August Burns Red

I recently discovered this band from a friend who sent me a link to one of their songs, Marianas Trench. Now I normally don't like screamo, but the beautiful intro to the song left me mesmerized. I went on to listen to some of their other songs, such as Meddler. Right from the beginning, it's full of so much absolutely bass-busting energy. I was once going through my cousin's cd collection, and on one of them he had written "To be played loud or not at all." Listening to these songs, I finally realize what that meant.

Unlike a lot of screamo, this band has a certain clarity that I like. All of the instruments sound well defined, and the lyrics mostly understandable. It's as if they are actually playing with a time signature, and the singer singing in a real key. I've tried listening to artists such as Slipknot, which I never really got into because they lack this. If you like any type of rock or hard rock, you should give this band a listen.
